Here are two apple-shaped gourds we bought last year to make into birdhouses this year. We let them set outside all year, turning them once a week or so. As you can see from the first picture, they weren't so pretty before I scrubbed them (right). After (left), they were gorgeous. We still need to finish the holes and water-proof them to hang for the birds. Think they'll like them? Here's a link to different size holes you need and the height at which to hang them if you want to make your own.

and the birds love them. The kids have fun painting them too.
